It is widely accepted that Lithium-Iron Phosphate (LFP) cathodes are the safest chemistry for Li-ion cells, however the study of them assembled in to battery modules or packs is lacking. Hence, this work provides the first computational study investigating the potential of thermal runaway propagation (TRP) in packs constructed of LFP 18650 cells.
The result shows that this strategy could achieve a high-capacity utilization rate (above 98%) of the battery pack and has the potential to be used in real BMS for on-line equalization.
While many studies only focus on battery degradation until 70 to 80% of the nominal capacity remains, we continue investigating aging until the cells only have 40 to 50% of the nominal capacity.
