What are VRLA Batteries? (Benefits of Using AGM Batteries)

VRLA batteries, or Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid batteries, are a specialized type of lead-acid battery. Unlike traditional flooded lead-acid batteries, VRLA batteries are sealed, meaning they don''t require regular maintenance like topping off water levels. This makes them a popular choice for many applications where ease of use and safety are priorities. Inside a

6 Frequently Asked Questions about “Valve-regulated lead-acid battery use standards”

What is the IEC/EN Guide to Valve Regulated Lead-acid batteries?

This guide to IEC/EN standards aims to increase the awareness, understanding and use of valve regulated lead-acid batteries for stationary applications and to provide the 'user' with guidance in the preparation of a Purchasing Specification.

What is a valve regulated cell or battery?

In this revision, particular reference is made to 'General Definitions', 'Product Characteristics', 'Design Life', 'Service Life' and 'Safety'. A valve regulated cell or battery is closed under normal conditions by a non-return control valve that allows gas to escape if the internal pressure exceeds a predetermined value.

What is a good voltage regulation for a battery?

Excessive ripple on the DC supply across a battery has the effect of reducing life and performance. It is recommended, therefore, that voltage regulation across the system, including the load, should be better than +/- 1% between 5% to 100% load, without the battery connected and under stable state of conditions.

How does a lead-acid battery work?

The cells of this kind of lead-acid battery may either have flat-plate electrodes in prismatic containers or have spirally wound pairs of electrodes in cylindrical containers. The sulphuric acid in these cells is immobilized between the electrodes either by absorption in a microporous structure or in a gelled form.

What happens when a lead acid battery is discharged?

The process is the same for all types of lead-acid batteries: flooded, gel and AGM. The actions that take place during discharge are the reverse of those that occur during charge. The discharged material on both plates is lead sulfate (PbSO4). When a charging voltage is applied, charge flow occurs.

What are the requirements for ventilation of battery rooms or cabinets?

Ventilation of battery rooms or cabinets shall be in accordance with with National Regulation and/or IEC/EN 62485-2. Internal resistance can be important to the equipment design and operation. The manufacturer shall state the value of internal resistance for a new battery.. This item is covered by chapter 6.3 of IEC/EN 60896-21 and -22.
