The loan guarantee will finance the deployment of up to 1,000 solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and battery energy storage systems (BESS) located primarily at commercial and industrial facilities and integrated across up to 27 states.
Should energy storage be included in the electric grid?
Integrating storage in the electric grid, especially in areas with high energy demand, will allow clean energy to be available when and where it is most needed. As New York continues to invest and build a cleaner grid, energy storage will allow us to use existing resources more efficiently and phase out the dirtiest power plants.
What are the different types of energy storage policy?
Approximately 16 states have adopted some form of energy storage policy, which broadly fall into the following categories: procurement targets, regulatory adaption, demonstration programs, financial incentives, and consumer protections. Below we give an overview of each of these energy storage policy categories.
Energy storage technologies and systems are regulated at the federal, state, and local levels, and must undergo rigorous safety testing to be authorized for installation in New York. You can download NYSERDA's New York State and New York City factsheets to learn more about energy storage regulations and safety in your community.
How are battery energy storage resources developing?
For the most part, battery energy storage resources have been developing in states that have adopted some form of incentive for development, including through utility procurements, the adoption of favorable regulations, or the engagement of demonstration projects.
Residential storage systems can be eligible for Inflation Reduction Act tax credits. Commercial storage: Businesses can install storage systems onsite or separate from building loads, like a community solar project. These systems can be paired with solar, provide back-up power, and earn compensation from utilities for delivering grid benefits.
What are the benefits of energy storage?
Energy storage offers a multitude of benefits, such as improving resiliency and reliability by providing backup power in the event of utility outages, as well as generating financial benefits for consumers that utilize time-of-use rates (TOUs).
